St Mary's, News 253 : A school set up by a descendant of Edmund Rice (who founded the Christian Brothers)

This is very interesting. A special civic event from Tanzanian School of St Jude, (the Australian-born founder of this school, Gemma Rice, is a descendant of Edmund Rice, Founder of Christian Brothers. Gemma has sent her second in charge to speak at Maryborough (Gemma was unable to travel due to pregnancy).

Any support you can give to this interesting and worthwhile cause would be appreciated.

The Rotary Club of Maryborough Sunrise has successfully secured a visit next month by Kim Saville from the School of St Jude in Tanzania.

The School of St Jude is a long-time recipient of support from our Rotary Club as well as many other Rotary Clubs. The story of the development and success of the school and the impacts that it has on the lives of students from this very under-developed part of the world is truly inspirational, as seen on ABC’s ‘Australian Story’.

Gemma Sisia, the Australian-born founder of the school was planning to come, but has just announced that she is unable to travel as she has just had another pregnancy confirmed and total rest ordered by her doctor. While we were all a little disappointed that she can't come, we celebrate her wonderful news with her. Kim is her 2-I-C and has travelled the journey of the school for most of the time with Gemma.

Kim will be speaking at a public event at the Maryborough City Hall (6:30 pm for 6:45 pm) on Friday 16 March 2011.

This will be followed by a light supper. The cost for attendance is $20 per adult and $10 for students 15 years and under. All profits from this event will be donated to the School of St Jude. We are already aware of at least one bus coming to Maryborough from Bundaberg to hear Kim.

I am attaching a flyer for the event as well as some background information on the School of St Jude. A short bio on Kim follows. There are also some pictures of Kim with Gemma and students.

Our club would be very grateful if you could distribute this information in your next newsletter/meeting/church service and encourage people to attend.

Kim Saville Bio.

Many of you know Kim and are aware that she has been my rock for the better half of a decade and together we have weathered the many storms and challenges of building a school in Africa.

Kim is our Deputy Director overseeing the three campuses, and her energy along with her commitment to and care for the staff and students of St Jude's is unwavering. Across Europe and the USA, Kim has represented St Jude's at Rotary clubs, schools, businesses and private functions for many years and has cemented and increased our support base substantially in those parts of the world.

In early 2002, following careers in theatre, adventure travel, publishing and film and television casting, Kim was looking for a new challenge into which she could pour her energy and skills. She happened to voice this out loud in Armidale and was told of a local girl, Gemma Rice, planning to set up a school for disadvantaged children in a village in Tanzania – now, that had to be a worthwhile challenge for a few months.

Kim emailed Gemma – “No teaching qualifications but I’ve got a pair of hands … any use?” A month later, Kim flew to Tanzania to join Gemma to do whatever was needed to help develop the little school. When she arrived there were nine students, one teacher, two buildings, one small bus, a set of swings and a computer.

Together with Angela Bailey, also from Sydney, Kim worked alongside Gemma and her husband, Richard, and discovered previously untapped talents such as ditch digging, bargaining for building materials, negotiating with government officials, employing staff, designing classroom buildings and writing fundraising letters.

Ten years later, Kim is still working alongside Gemma to ensure that Gemma’s vision of a school offering high-quality education for the bright, motivated children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds in the Arusha district is realised. As Deputy Director, Kim now oversees three campuses where 400 staff and 1,600 students make up The School of St Jude.

I always thought that roofs in Jesus’ time must have been made with straw and easier to break into, hence the ease with which the people break through the roof of the house in Capernaum to let down the stretch of the paralytic man. But it seems that was a wrong assumption. In the Holy Lands we were shown the type of roofs that would have been like the one they broke through and it’s a hardened mixture of straw, mud, rock and the like – more like concrete. It would have been quite a chore to break through and shows just how determined they were to get their friend to Jesus. It has been suggested that roofs were removable in Jesus time, for seasonal needs, but it was nevertheless not an easy job and not necessarily something that would admit of a partial breakthrough! The people who did this

surprising action KNEW that Jesus would be a source of assistance and healing for their friend. We too are determined to approach our Lord and also bring our friends, our family and our parishioners to the Lord in our prayers, certain of Jesus’ care, compassion and saving help. The first reading is also encouraging. See, says the Lord, I am making something new! The Lord has a way of making new beginnings when we feel we are at a dead end. The Lord is at work in our lives and in the lives of those around us, working to establish his Kingdom amongst us. We are eager to be of assistance in this

wonderful work. Many came to Jesus believing he would heal them, but in the midst of the crowd were some waiting to catch him crossing religious boundary lines. Whether, though, it was the believers who actively sought him out or his enemies with malice in their hearts, they both wanted to know the same thing: Who is this man? Another wonder-working healer? A blasphemer? Or the very Son of God who has the authority and power to forgive sins? People today face the same question. Who is Jesus? Can he forgive us? Do we feel forgivable? Can we forgive? Jesus invites us to a new way of seeing and thinking that is at once connected to God’s faithful presence of the past but also new and surprising. Shall we be open to the surprise

of God’s new ways?

PLEASE READ THIS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE MUSIC MINISTRY:

We are quite a few weeks into the new church year and we would like to make 2012 a year of renewal within this ministry. Here are some facts of which you may be unaware. There are presently two organists and one guitar/piano group covering the weekend masses and one pianist and a singing group who are available for the fifth Sundays in the year. We are fortunate to have a small faithful choir.

Two choir members are in their early sixties and most of the others are on their way to eighty and

beyond. Some choir members also double up as ‘lead singers.’ Three of the musicians are also closer to eighty than seventy. We appreciate all contributions made to the music ministry and whilst our

members are experienced, none of us is getting any younger!

In order to share the load and to maintain the good reputation St Mary’s has for its choir and music,

we are imploring you to give prayerful consideration to becoming a member of a singing group/choir, an organist, a keyboard player or an instrumentalist. Age does not matter. A trained or big voice is not a requirement—just a love of singing! If you think you might be rusty, don’t worry, help will be available. We are aiming HIGH. We need numbers of singers and players so that the load will not be so heavy for the faithful few so that they are able to take holidays when they wish. Full training is offered.

Remember, singing/playing in a group/choir is LIFE ENHANCING. To be part of raising the standard

of music in the foreseeable future, please contact the parish office between 8.30 and 12.30 weekdays or phone 41213701 and we will happily pass on your name and contact details.

We welcome College students John Ward, Hayley Symington and Nicholas Knauseder and also Michael Byrne, Mary-Clare McKinnon and Denella Sawtell as Ministers of the Word. Thanks to Denis Kettle, Nicholas McKinnon and Anna Parker who are pursuing other interests this year.

SOME CHANGES TO MASS ROUTINE: We will be saying the Gloria and the Responsorial Psalm

instead of singing them. The person who does the First Reading will also read the Psalm so we ask that you prepare the Reading and the Psalm whenever you are rostered on.

BAPTISM: On Sunday, we will welcome Shyloh Behrendorff, daughter of Collin and Amanda, into our parish family.

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE: It’s only a week until the tourists head off on their two week adventure and we wish them a safe and fulfilling journey and we look forward to hearing all about their experiences. Fr Pat Dowd will stay in the parish during Fr Paul’s absence.

ST PAUL’S ANGLICAN CHURCH BELL RESTORATION APPEAL: The bells have graced Maryborough since their installation in 1888 and have been rung to mark important events in this city’s history ever since. The craftsmanship and dedication of the original tradesmen who created the bells has proven itself over the last century with very few repairs being required. This will be the first time the bells have been lifted from the tower........in a massive operation they will be raised through the roof one by one, carefully crated and packed, then sent to the foundry in London where they will be refitted and returned to their original condition. The Appeal is looking to raise $150,000.00 for these works to be completed which sounds like a lot of money but in reality equates to just over $1,000.00 for every year these magnificent bells have been in service. One way we can assist is by purchasing a ticket for $5—1st prize is a watercolour painting by local artist Lex Frank valued at $1,500.00, 2nd prize is a travel voucher for $500.00 from Wide Bay Transit. The draw will take place on 23rd April this year. Tickets are available at our parish office. There are brochures in the church.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be held each Friday during Lent at 5 p.m. commencing on 24th February in both St Mary’s and Sacred Heart Church at Tiaro.

SEW PNG: This hard working group gathered to celebrate one year of operation last week with a morning tea in the parish hall. The interest is growing and the support for the cause to sew clothing for the remote villagers around Tufi is commendable. A shipment of cloth nappies and bed linen and some medical supplies is currently on its way to Port Moresby which will come in very handy.

CONGRATULATIONS to Babette Rampton and Cameron Hale who were married in St Mary’s on Saturday 18th February.

OPEN SESAME: Following the vandalism of four of the church doors last November, the repairs to the three internal ones were completed some time ago. The external door near the pipe organ has been replaced with a new door which looks great. I’m sure the people who sit in that area of the church will be delighted that they can open the door to let the breeze in again. Why don’t you check it out, too!

SPEECH BY ST. MARY’S COLLEGE PRINCIPAL. MRS JOY MASSINGHAM. ON THE OCCASION OF THE COLLEGE OPENING MASS AT ST MARY’S CHURCH. TUESDAY 14^TH FEBRUARY, 2012.

Good evening Father Paul, Mrs Kathy Banney (Pastoral Associate), Mr Michael Byrne (Chairman of the Parish Council), Mrs Joan Massingham, (President of Catholic Women’s League) and members St Mary’s community. As we gather to begin a new year at our College, we are grateful that we are able to come together in prayer and give thanks for our Parish and school communities. Tonight we welcome more than eighty new families to our community. Our wish is that each of you is able to enjoy our hospitality and that you settle in quickly.

I also take great pleasure in introducing our new staff members for 2012. We welcome Ms Tracy Wright (music teacher), Mr Tom Taylor (contract replacing Mr Denis Kettle for 12 months) and Mrs Gloria Wilkinson who has replaced Mrs Allikas for these three weeks. Mrs Glennice Ready has accepted the position of Bidwill House Coordinator and we thank Mrs Simone Collins for the love and care she has given to Bidwill House members for the past years. We also welcome Mrs Lisa Stewart as Finance Secretary and Mrs Helen Reason, Acting Business Manager, while Mr Gerard O’Connell is on leave.

Tonight we acknowledge and congratulate all students as each and every one is a leader in following the values of Jesus in our community.

Leadership is not something that switches on and off, or is defined by a badge. Leadership involves effort. The students in formal leadership positions will participate in numerous activities that will involve a lot of effort. The real effort however starts now that the selection processes are finished. It is now that elected leaders have to repay the trust given to them by their peers and teachers. Leaders with badges or formal roles have responsibilities to represent the school appropriately at all times. Students who miss out on formal leadership positions also have a responsibility to show their commitment to their community.

In the words of Jim Rohn: “The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humour, but without folly.” Jim Rohn

We encourage all our Year 12s to see challenges as opportunities to grow, to test themselves in new situations, to learn more about themselves and their potential. Leaders seldom say "I can't". Such leaders know that while they may fail or be disappointed in their response to the challenge, they also know that they will learn and be better prepared next time. For this reason, you will often hear leaders say they "welcome new challenges".

Accepting, meeting and looking for new challenges is a voluntary pursuit. In our College there will be opportunities to volunteer. Some of these opportunities you may find challenging. While it is easy to avoid such opportunities you can 'welcome new challenges' if you initially choose challenges that are aligned to your interests or within your existing set of personal skills. Other students, more experienced at leading, may pursue more difficult or time consuming challenges to test themselves or assist others beneficially. All students however, have an opportunity to say "I will try". Trying does not mean that you will be successful, but you will learn from the experiences you have. Students who want success before commitment should understand that it rarely happens this way. There needs to be a commitment when welcoming a challenge — a commitment to self and to others, a commitment to "I will try". Students who welcome new challenges are leaders who want to learn and also want to try.

Leaders will be trusted only if they have made the effort to build trust. To build trust leaders must be honest, be good listeners and ask good questions.

Lastly, To build trust leaders must maintain the effort. I trust and hope you will all accept the responsibility to become leaders in your own lives and thus in the life of your communities. Then we, your parents and teachers will know you have learned the lessons to be participants of a better world. I leave you with words from Golda Meir, Israel Prime Minister.

“Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.”

· World day of prayer coming up. Anglican church. Friday the 2^nd March, 2012. That is a wonderful ecumenical event.

· Mission and vision of Jesus: Lent programme, focus Jesus and his mission. Maybe upcoming years of grace (Australian, Pentecost to Pentecost), years of faith (october ‘12 to November ’13)… will give us some ideas and involvement. Watch this space.

· Young people: for example, revamp childrens lit, looking into youth choir, looking at youth-focused masses. Eg all readings by young people. Involvement.

- Parishioner approached Michael and asked about the sign at the front of the church needs repair. We are looking into this.

The St Mary’s Primary school opening mass was so special on Friday (10/2/12). Parishioners joined staff, students and family with Fr Paul in the Jack McKay Centre at St Mary’s Primary. Well done everyone.

“Brothers and sisters: Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”

(1 Corinthians 10:31)

Saint Paul offers the people of Corinth very good advice. This teaching is needed in this day and age as much as then: “For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.”

There is something truly liberating in making our focus about the good of others and not merely ourselves.

Are we doing everything possible for the glory of God? Or is there maybe some other way that we could generously share our time, talent or treasure for God’s glory? Let us think about it.

The Gospel this weekend is truly and literally “touching.” It is about Jesus curing the man who had leprosy. Skin diseases such as this were treated with fear and revulsion because they were considered highly contagious and a danger to the community, which had limited means of treating such outbreaks. Lepers were outcasts, forced to live outside of the community and unable to come near others, let alone touch anyone. It must have been a devastating and horrible existence. A leper comes up to him and begs him to cure him, “if you want to, you could cure me!” he says with faith. Jesus’ reply is wonderful: “Of COURSE I want to cure you, BE cured.” Jesus had shown that he could heal people with just a word or a gesture, so it is highly revealing that this incident shows him doing more than that. He reached over and TOUCHED him. He touched a leper. To do so would have made him technically unclean, although he knew that he was not actually unclean. Jesus loves us so much he is prepared to reach out and become the thing of revulsion in order to save others. He took on the worst that humanity had to bear in order to break the power of it in the lives of others. We are called to reach out and to go to the margins, where people are outcast and rejected and show them by our actions and attitudes, the love and compassion and inclusion of Jesus.

LENTEN DISCUSSIONS: These will commence the week of 20th February so we are looking for people to host/lead a group and ask that you put your details on the whiteboard in the church so that others can join the group that best suits them. Books will need to be ordered so please attend to this no later than Tuesday 14th February. Thanks to everyone who attended the workshop at Hervey Bay last Sunday.

GLORY TO GOD! PLEASE READ THIS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE MUSIC MINISTRY AT ST MARY’S: We are quite a few weeks into the new church year and we would like

to make 2012 a year of renewal within this ministry. Here are some facts of which you may be

unaware. There are presently two organists and one guitar/piano group covering the weekend masses and one pianist and a singing group who are available for the fifth Sundays in the year. We are

fortunate to have a small faithful choir. Two choir members are in their early sixties and most of the

others are on their way to eighty and beyond. Some choir members also double up as ‘lead singers.’ Three of the musicians are also closer to eighty than seventy. We appreciate all contributions made

to the music ministry and whilst our members are experienced, none of us is getting any younger!

In order to share the load and to maintain the good reputation St Mary’s has for its choir and music,

Remember, singing/playing in a group/choir is LIFE ENHANCING. To be part of raising the standard

Mark 1:29-39: (NIV). As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

The remains of Simon and Andrew’s house in Capernaum, referred to in this weekend’s Gospel. This tight-knit town is on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and a church is built suspended above the house, and only metres from the ruins of the synagogue.

The heart of the gospel is the heart of Jesus. And Jesus’ heart is found drawing him to be with those who are sick and struggling and suffering. The mission of Christ is to preach the good news from God, which is good news in spite of the crosses in life, and not denying the real crosses in life. We believe in God who gives us the grace and the vision to walk through the very real and very painful tragedies and disasters in life with (at the same time) a deep and realistic hope and strength. Both the second reading and the gospel this week provide "call stories" for reflection on vocation. Saint Paul describes the nature of his mission, and Jesus affirms that preaching and healing are the reasons for which he has come. How do you understand the "obligation," to use Paul's term, God has given you in your ministry? What is your purpose?

Job says life is hard. Anybody want to disagree with that? Life is hard when your work is servile and degrading, your nights sleepless, your days unhappy. Oh, and then you die. What a package deal mortality turns out to be!

Job had a point. He suffered some pretty excruciating events. Economical reversals wipe out his finances. His children are killed in a natural disaster. A cruel affliction strikes his health and renders him outcast and anguished. His wife does not support him, and his churchy friends tell him it’s all his fault. Another man might do as Job’s wife recommends: “Curse God and die.” Instead Job demands to talk with the Almighty. Though reality itself has become a living nightmare, Job trusts that God is still on his side.

Most people spend a season or two of their lives on the ash heap next to Job. Money evaporates. People you cherish and depend on are lost to you. Your health fails. Family and friends seem less than understanding. Some of these factors may be entirely beyond your control, but you do have one real choice in the matter of your existence: whether to curse God, lie down, and let fate run over you or whether to renew your confidence that the Lord of the Universe is, always and everywhere, on your side.

It’s useless to put your trust anywhere else. The material goods of this world are unreliable. Even your favorite sports team is bound to fail you sometime (perhaps many times), and so will the people you care about most, and for the same reason: They aren’t invincible. They’re frail, fallible folks all twisted up in an array of personal factors that tug them in the direction of self-love and self-preservation just when you need them the most. That doesn’t mean it’s time to throw up your hands and repeat after Job, “I will not see happiness again!” but it may be time to do some soul-searching about where your true confidence lies.

From time to time Saint Paul found his circumstances as overwhelming as Job did. He was a Pharisee preaching the Christ in a very secular Greek world that didn’t care for Judaism or Christianity: Try that reality on for size and feel the discomfort! Preaching the gospel was hard—but withholding it from a weary, dismal world was out of the question. He took his perspective from Jesus, who preached and healed all day and into the night—then got up at dawn to pray and do it all again.

Why do so much and care so much? Because the truth still needs to be told. Because Job is out there, scratching and suffering. God’s heart, too, is restless until we all rest in God.

This 2012 Rally For Life is more important than ever as the pro-abortion industry lobbyists realise this may be their last chance for some time to change abortion laws in Queensland to get what they want – abortion up to the day of birth!

Given the current polls, it seems unlikely that premier Anna Bligh and her Labor government will retain power at the soon to be held state election. The pro-abortion lobbyists will increase their pressure on Ms Bligh to change the law.

Even though the most recent polls showed there is no consensus of opinion to legalise abortion in Queensland, pressure is still being applied by the noisy minority, and there could be the possibility that as the writing is already on the wall and with little more to lose from an election perspective, she could allow a private member’s bill decriminalising abortion to be tabled and then rushed through the parliament.

Abortion is increasingly becoming an issue of great concern for Catholics. It is having and profound affect on our society and is a problem we can no longer afford to ignore.

How might we help break the cycle of abortion, abandonment and despair? There can be no simple answers to such a complex problem. Yet we are called to be the people of life and love. Everyone has an obligation to be at the service of life. Every member of the Christian community is called to welcome new life, and to welcome the vulnerable and the stranger. Pope John Paul II offered us some great insights into this problem when he suggested that it was necessary to become courageously ‘pro-woman,’ promoting a choice that is truly in favour of women. The only honest stance was that of radical solidarity with the woman. It is not right to leave her alone.

Therefore, if we want to care for unborn children, we must first care for their mothers. Women with unplanned pregnancies need to be offered genuine alternatives to abortion. No woman should have to choose between her own well-being and the life of her child. Together we must find new ways in which every pregnant woman might be welcomed, honoured and loved, no matter what her circumstances. “Women with unplanned pregnancy deserve to experience unexpected joy.” For information and support visit where to find support.

Every human life is precious and deserves our reverence and love from conception until natural death. As Pope Benedict reminds us, “…each one of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary.” All human rights ultimately depend on our recognition of this.

Pope John Paul II encouraged us to reach out with love to all those left wounded and grieving in his encyclical on life, Evangelium Vitae, (#99). He did not condemn them but offered them compassion and hope. He encouraged them to seek reconciliation and forgiveness from the Church and to seek assistance and help from experts.

AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS: Last week we acknowledged the great achievements of Senior Citizen of the Year, Lesley Cairns, and College students Anna Parker and Kate Law in the Fraser Coast Award Ceremony. However, we didn’t mention Danielle Waterson one of the College Captains for last year who was named Junior Citizen of the Year and Ray & Elva Alloway who received an award for their contribution to Sport and we now congratulate them and offer our sincere apologies for the oversight.

LENTEN WORKSHOP: The theme for this year's Lenten programme is “Towards the Light” and Hervey Bay Parish is hosting a gathering for people in the North Country Deanery today Sunday 5th February from 10.30 – 12 noon in the John Paul Centre in the grounds to St Joseph’s Church in Pialba. It is hoped that a good number of parishioners from here will be able to attend. The seminar will be led by Fr Anthony Mellor and Rob Cosgrove from Faith & Life. It will begin with a visual reflection on the significance of light in the universe, how it gives life and illuminates our world and we will also

reflect on the meaning of Lenten practices and symbols.

VOLUNTEER AWARD: At St Mary’s College Assembly last Monday, the College was honoured to welcome Federal Member The Hon. Mr Warren Truss to present a Federal Government Volunteer Award to Mrs Karen Ritchie who is the uniform shop convenor. Karen has been running the shop for a number of years which is open for sales six hours per week. However, Karen spends a lot more time in ordering, sorting and sourcing the items. Karen’s spirit of generosity and her friendly disposition is very

much appreciated.

READING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM ST MARY’S PRIMARY SCHOOL: This was so successful last year that the school is going to continue with it. A number of people gave a little time each week to

Like Jesus, who reached out to the marginalised people of his time, Centacare provides practical, compassionate support to the elderly, the infirm, the hospitalised, unemployed people, people with disabilities, members of indigenous communities, people affected by mental illness, prisoners and their families, young people, and parents and families in crisis. Please pray for the repose of Ellen Margery (Marge) McGANN, formerly of Ann Street, Maryborough. Passed away at Fairhaven Maryborough, on January 28, 2012. Aged 95 Years. Loved mother and mother-in-law of Leo and May, Des and Clare, Gerry and Jan, Carmel and Barry, Tony and Sandra and (Rita dec’d). Loved grandmother, great and great-great grandmother of their families. Funeral Prayers will be conducted in St Mary’s Catholic Church, Adelaide Street, Maryborough on Thursday, February 2 at 1.30pm, followed by interment in the Maryborough Garden of Rest Cemetery.

This 2012 Rally For Life is more important than ever as the pro- industry lobbyists realise this may be their last chance for some time to change abortion laws in Queensland to get what they want – abortion up to the day of birth!

Even though the most recent polls showed there is no consensus of opinion to legalise abortion in Queensland, pressure is still being applied by the noisy minority, and there could be the possibility that as the writing is already on the wall and with little more to lose from an election perspective, she could allow a private member’s bill de-criminalising abortion to be tabled and then rushed through the parliament.

The role of the prophet is not to predict the future but rather to speak of what God is doing here and now in this community. The role of prophet is not a self-appointed one but a God-appointed one. Much harm has been done throughout the

generations when false prophets claim to speak of the right path but are only speaking their own words or words that

humour the false ways of the times. The first reading reminds us all that we are to discern God’s will and distinguish it from our own whims. We must be open and responsive to God’s ways and values that challenge us as well as convict and

forgive us at different times of our journey.

Jesus taught "as one with authority." His words as well as his actions amazed those around him; in fact, in today's gospel story, it is his words that do the healing. Unlike the scribes, who interpreted Hebrew scripture and told stories of the words and deeds of biblical figures, Jesus embodied divine words and deeds in the present and in his person. Like him, his followers do well to say what they believe and believe what they say;

to do what they believe and believe in what they do. Jesus’ message frequently warned his followers to beware that they are not trading in empty words in place of the powerful,

authority-filled words of the Lord; words that are about the

gospel of love, forgiveness, justice and reverence towards

God and our neighbour.

Paul’s words seem so jarring in this day and age: “I should like you to be free of anxieties," Saint Paul wrote the Corinthians. The scenario he described--whether to remain single given the expectation of Christ's imminent return--may not be one that today's Christians would take as seriously, but people still need to find ways to be "anxious" about the things of the Lord amidst being anxious about the things of the world.

Saint Paul believed that the Kingdom was so imminent and urgent that people should live in the moment and not worry about the ordinary events of marriage and family life. Naturally, marriage and the family are a profound and beautiful vocation and worthy. For us today, this text challenges us to value our vocation (whether it be to marriage or celibacy – both are good), and balance our earthly commitments with our heavenly calling – and bring the two into harmony. Marriage and Celibacy are two sides of the same coin. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

NOTE CHANGE TO RECONCILIATION PROCEDURE: On the first Thursday of each month, we have a Holy Hour, Reconciliation and Benediction before the midday Mass. As from this Thursday, Reconciliations begin at 11.15 a.m. to allow enough time for Benediction. Reconciliation concludes once those who have arrived for 11.15 have celebrated the Sacrament.

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE: A meeting will be held this Wednesday 1st February at 6 p.m. at the Presbytery to find out more about the trip and discuss any concerns. We are looking into the possibility of chartering a bus direct to Brisbane Airport on Monday 27th February as well as for the return trip home in the early hours of Monday 12th March and we will need to know at this meeting who is

interested in this.

LENTEN PROGRAMME: The theme for this year is “Towards the Light” and a preview will be held for people in the North Country Deanery on Sunday 5th February from 10.30 – 12 noon in the John Paul Centre in the grounds to St Joseph’s Church in Pialba. It is hoped that a good number of parishioners from here will be able to attend. The seminar will be led by Fr Anthony Mellor and Rob Cosgrove from Faith & Life. It will begin with a visual reflection on the significance of light in the universe, how it gives life and illuminates our world and we will also reflect on the meaning of Lenten practices and symbols.

LENTEN DISCUSSIONS: These will commence the week of 20th February so we are looking for people to host/lead a group and ask that you put your details on the whiteboard in the church so that others can join the group that best suits them. Books will need to be ordered by the second week in February so please attend to this as soon as possible.

BAPTISMS: Today (Sunday) Noah Schwarzrock, son of Edward and Lisa, and Pattison Neale, son of Marc and Katrina, will receive the Sacrament.

WEDDING CONGRATULATIONS to Ashleigh Redman and Scott Ridgley who will exchange vows in the presence of family and friends on Saturday 4th February in St Mary’s.

MUSIC ROSTERS are available for collection from the sign-in table at Masses this weekend. Choir members please note that practice will be held at the usual time of 4 p.m. this Tuesday.

APPEAL THANKS: 1) The members of St. Mary's Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society wish to sincerely thank parishioners for their very generous support of our Christmas Appeal. A total of $7,864 was received which is an excellent result. 2) Catholic Mission has written a letter of thanks for contributions totalling $2,889.85 to last year’s appeal. Your ongoing support of appeals such as these is very much appreciated.

BRIDGE CANCELLATION: A reminder that Bridge held on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month over a number of years has ceased. The proceeds from this activity totalling $11,407.30 has been used to help pay off the loan originally taken out by the parish to purchase the Convent building and some years ago taken over by the Primary School. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

THANKS SARAH: We extend a belated vote of thanks to Sarah Kirk who has been leading the singing while playing the piano at our Masses over the last couple of years. Sarah has taken up a teaching position in Brisbane and we wish her all the best. Sarah was always reliable and dedicated to her

commitment to the music ministry and we will miss her sweet voice. Our other musicians will miss her too because it means there is one less person to fill the roster.

AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS: Congratulations to everyone who received recognition for their contribution to the community, particularly Citizen of the Year, Lesley Cairns, who has spent much of her life working for the disadvantaged. Lesley was one of the founding members of the combined Anglican and Catholic Soup Kitchen which is still operating on a weekly basis. College students Anna Parker and Kate Law received the Young People’s Cultural Award and the Young Sportsperson Award respectively.

Abortion is increasingly becoming an issue of great concern for Catholics. It is having and profound affect on our society and is a problem we can no longer afford to ignore.

Until recently abortion was rarely ever spoken about. Many people would rather not think about it as it often makes them uncomfortable. Often we know someone, a friend or relative who has had an abortion and we don’t want to upset them so we tend to avoid the issue altogether. Alternatively we may not know what to say. Although society claims that abortion “solves the problem” of an unplanned pregnancy, and allows women to “get on with their lives,” this is not the lived experience of many women and men. Instead abortion leaves them shattered and grieving. In raising awareness of abortion, the Church seeks not to condemn those whose lives have been left broken and hurt but to bring new understanding, forgiveness and peace. She wants ultimately, to bring about a change of heart, and to transform our community into a civilisation of love.

Sadly, abortion is becoming an increasing problem in Australia. We have one of the highest rates of abortion in the Western World with 1:4 pregnancies ending in abortion (see Common Ground resource). It is thought that at least 1:3 women will have an abortion at some stage in their life based on current rates. Many women speak of not really wanting an abortion but of having of having one under pressure from others. Countless women feel abandoned and alone at the time they make the decision to have an abortion. Afterwards they describe abortion as a profound wound to the soul.

Pope John Paul II encouraged us to reach out with love to all those left wounded and grieving after an abortion. He wrote beautifully to women who have had an abortion in his encyclical on life, Evangelium Vitae, (#99). He did not condemn them but offered them compassion and hope. He encouraged them to seek reconciliation and forgiveness from the Church and to seek assistance and help from experts. There are a number of organisations offering assistance and healing to those suffering after an abortion.

Thanks to everyone who felt able to sign the petition campaigning for justice and a closing of a rather unfortunate and scary common law partial defence of sexual advance in cases of murder. The government has said that it means to close this loophole except in exceptional situations. This is a victory for common sense and of concerned people speaking out to send a message that respects all human life from the danger of violence or death. Whilst I still have concerns about possible gaps and lack of clarity at this stage; this is still a great success and I thank everyone for their prayerful support. I will keep the petition open online for the time being, because it is not yet fixed and if the changes pass there is not 100% clarity they will truly eradicate the problem, so there is a vigilance needed here. In the Scriptures today, the response of the Ninevites and of the apostles Simon, James, shows examples of immediate repentance and turning to follow God. It is a good question to ask ourselves…. Why do I take so long to accept the invitation to repent, acknowledge the areas in which I have failed and in which I have done the wrong thing and make a change?

There is a strong theme of “immediacy” in the readings this weekend. There is no time for hesitation. Time is short and there is so much to be done for the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is at hand, the gospel says this week. It has begun. It is within us and among us. It's happening now. "Thy kingdom come" means "let your kingdom continue to move toward its

fulfilment." Do we, as hearers of the Word of God, have a

sufficient sense of urgency about the kingdom? Worrying about the end of the world is one thing; but, realizing your role in

doing something for the kingdom now is another. Rather than be comfortable with their faith, believers in Christ need to realize time is running out; the world is passing away and a new creation is coming to be. Are we involved, or watching from the sidelines? Let us make a brief examination of conscience and identify what we need to repent.

· Do we have a sense of the urgent call of the gospel

of Christ?

In her autobiography The Long Loneliness, Dorothy Day, (the co-founder of the Catholic Worker

movement), told many stories of how people came to be part of the Worker. One was Hazen Ordway. He had been the librarian at the seminary of the Marist order in Washington. He heard Dorothy speak there in 1937, and in her words, "left immediately to join us, associating himself with us ever since."

+Ordway heard something that persuaded him to stop what he was doing and follow a call. When

Jesus called his apostles, he also came to them in the midst of their everyday work, and they literally dropped it and followed him. They recognized something so compelling and true and vital to them that they threw caution to the wind and changed the direction of their lives – “turning around on a dime”

(as the saying goes), much like the citizens of Nineveh who repented at the words of Jonah so

immediately and completely that even God was impressed and changed God's mind--that is,

repented.

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE: With only five weeks until the group of 15 head off on their overseas

adventure, it’s time to gather together to sort out any concerns. A meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st February at 6 p.m. at the Presbytery. In the meantime, please consider how you might be travelling to Brisbane to catch the flight and return home .......are you able to find your own way or would you prefer to travel as a group bearing in mind the departure times?

LENTEN PROGRAMME: The theme for this year is “Towards the Light” and a preview will be held for people in the North Country Deanery on Sunday 5th February from 10.30 – 12 noon in the John Paul Centre, next to St Joseph’s Church in Hervey Bay. It is hoped that a good representation of parishioners will be able to attend. The seminar will be led by Fr Anthony Mellor and Rob Cosgrove from Faith & Life. It will begin with a visual reflection on the significance of light in the universe, how it gives life and illuminates our world. This will be followed by prayer and meditation. Fr Anthony and Rob will provide input on the symbol of light as a metaphor for God’s grace and mercy and our response in faith, words and actions. The group will also reflect on the meaning of Lenten practices and symbols. Ash Wednesday falls on 22nd February so we will be asking you to put your names down at the end of the month if you wish to take part in a small group discussion for the six weeks of Lent so that the necessary books can be ordered in plenty of time.

AUSTRALIA DAY THURSDAY 26TH JANUARY—MASS AT SPECIAL TIME OF 8 A.M. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WILL BE THE ONLY MASS FOR THIS DAY.

DONATION: Following the success of last year’s Songs of Praise and due to the active participation of several of our parishioners, the committee has passed on a donation of $300 to be used towards the upkeep of our pipe organ. The organ is tuned and serviced twice a year so we are very appreciative

of this donation.

CWL MEMBERSHIP: A reminder that Subscription of $25 for 2012 should be placed in a marked

envelope and handed in at the first meeting for the year on 14th February. Many thanks to the League for the generous donation of $2250.00 to assist with the ever-increasing costs of maintenance.

Congratulations to all members on another successful year pastorally, financially and socially.

CCI BONUS: As part of the Catholic Church Insurances commitment to give back to parishes a share of their investment returns, we recently received a cheque for $1,453.51 representing our entitlement for the financial year ended 30th June, 2011. This will go some way towards the cost of repairs to the church doors following the vandalism in late November. A tradesman is working on replacing the side door near the pipe organ which we hope will be fitted in the near future.

A Vocation View: Even a great person like Jonah turned away, at first, from what God called him to do. It is never too late to hear the Lord say, “Come follow me.”

VATICAN CITY (CNS):

In an effort to help Catholics have a better and correct understanding of their faith and become authentic witnesses to Christ, the Holy See has issued a list of pastoral recommendations for celebrating the upcoming Year of Faith.

Pope Benedict XVI announced this Year of Faith, which runs from October 11 this year to November 24, 2013, to help the church focus its attention on "Jesus Christ and the beauty of having faith in him," the note also said.

"The Church is well aware of the problems facing the faith" and recognises that without a revitalisation of faith rooted in a personal encounter with Jesus, "then all other reforms will remain ineffective," it said, citing Pope Benedict's December 22 address to the Roman Curia.

The year is meant to "contribute to a renewed conversion to the Lord Jesus and to the rediscovery of faith, so that the members of the Church will be credible and joy-filled witnesses to the risen Lord, capable of leading those many people who are seeking it to the door of faith," the note said.

Critical to renewing one's faith and being a credible witness is having a firm and correct understanding of Church teaching, it said.

Because the year's start in October coincides with the anniversaries of the opening of the Second Vatican Council in 1962 and the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 1992, it would be an auspicious occasion to make the work of the council and the catechism "more widely and deeply known," it said.

Some recommendations for bishops, dioceses and parishes include ensuring there be better quality catechetical materials that conform to Church teaching; promoting Catholic principles and the significance of Vatican II in the mass media; hosting events that bring artists, academics and others together to renew dialogue between faith and reason; offering penitential celebrations and putting a focus on liturgy, especially the Eucharist, it said.

Other initiatives during the Year of Faith include:

- An invitation for the faithful to turn with particular devotion to Mary, model of the Church, who "shines forth to the whole community of the elect as the model of virtues".

- The organising of many symposia, conferences and large gatherings through to the international level to encourage encounters with authentic witness to the faith and to promote understanding of the contents of Catholic doctrine.

- In preparation for the Year of Faith, all of the faithful are invited to read closely and meditate upon Pope Benedict XVI's Apostolic Letter, “Porta fidei”.

- Educators in centres of theological studies, seminaries and Catholic universities should be encouraged in their teaching to demonstrate the relevance within their various disciplines of the contents of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and of the implications derived from them.

- It is hoped there will be a renewed commitment in parishes to the distribution of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and of other resources appropriate for families, which are true domestic churches and the primary setting for the transmission of the faith.
